Human Rights Association held a press conference against human rights violations in Iran. The joint statement signed by 357 human rights defenders was read at the press conference.
357 human rights defenders made a joint statement at Ankara Branch of Human Rights Association urging for an immediate cessation of state violence perpetrated by the regime in Iran, today (November 14).
The joint statement was read by writer Mahmut Temizyürek, on behalf of the signatories. Zahra Sedighi Hamedani and Elham Chubdar, who were condemned to death due to their sexual orientation before the protests started with the slaughter of Masha Amini, were also mentioned within the scope of the joint statement entitled “We say no the massacre, detentions, arrests and death sentences in Iran”.
The whole text of the joint statement is as follows:
“The Islamic regime in Iran, goes on to oppress and crush the society, especially women, down. The excessive violence ordered by the regime to law enforcement officers on the grounds of veiling, hijab and morality continues to claim the life.
Unfortunately, the latest news and information about Iran displays that the country is going through a very difficult process in terms of democracy, fundamental rights and freedoms. More than 400 people, including the majority of children and young people, have been killed for participating in the protests, which have been continuing unabated since the death of Masha Amini. More than 15.000 people were arrested, a great deal of missing persons were reported and death penalty is sought for detainees.
The universities are closed and the education has almost been at standstill. Except some activities and press events by partisan media that propagandize for the government, there is a ban on producing something regarding arts and culture and cinema. Many intellectuals, including litterateurs, directors and etc., particularly Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof, are in prison. The detentions rapidly turns into arrestment on the grounds of “waging war against Gof and Islam.” For instance Kurdish rapper and a resident of Tehran, Sayman Seydi was sentenced to death penalty due to organizing the protests, after a 10 minutes – judgement. And LGBTIQ+ activists Zahra Sedighi Hamedani and Elham Chubdar were also sentenced to death penalty due to their sexual orientation, being lesbians.
And finally within the scope of the joint-letter, addressed to Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i, signed by 227 members of the Iranian Parliament, Iranian lawmakers called for severe punishment of those who indicted the recent riots and show no mercy against those who commit terrorism against the Islamic state. And this letter has increased our concern about the death penalty and possible executions.
We, the undersigned;
demand an immediate cessation of griefs experienced by Iranian people, to stop the state violence perpetrated by the regime at once, to release the detainees and arrested people, to recognize inarguably the inviolable rights of women, such as right to life, as equal and free individuals and women’s right to choose their dress; to organize a fair and democratic election in which all parties will take part equally and freely under the supervision of international delegations as soon as possible; and we announce to the whole world that we stand by the Iranian people’s demands for freedom, equality and democracy.
