Filmmaker Ümit Ünal: I exist with my movies to spite the impudence Kaos GL - News Portal for LGBTI+

Reactions to Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival pre-jury member Tunca Arslan's statement on Ulusal Kanal that “There are no LGBT-themed films this year” continue. Following the festival's Artistic Director Deniz Yavuz, director and screenwriter Ümit Ünal also reacted to Arslan's statements.

Speaking to Emrah Kolukısa from BirGün, Ünal said the following:

“I looked at the news about the Golden Orange about 20 years ago, in 2005: At the closing Mercan Dede concert, Aynur sang a Kurdish folk song. (The protocol did not applaud.) Ferzan Özpetek was again the jury president. Reha Erdem's Korkuyorum Anne, my favorite film of his, was ignored and the award was given to the first film of a young director who never made a film again. (I say it was given, but I was there and I was a huge disappointment as a viewer). Nowadays, a Kurdish folk song on the festival stage is something unimaginable. Now a man on the pre-jury can say in his unfortunate and impudent speech “There were no LGBT and funded films in the festival”, “The era of films that are distant and too critical of Turkey is over”, etc. So Aşk, Büyü vs. would not have gotten into the Golden Orange if they were this year's movie, yet they graciously let me in. So in this “new era”, will there be room for only state-funded films with bland content? Will the aesthetics of TRT series dominate the festivals?”
