Italian Parliament Approves of Discrimination Kaos GL - News Portal for LGBTI+
The Italian LGBT association Arcigay announced after the parliament rejected the law that will protect LGBT people, that “in Italy there is a real democratic emergency.”

The Italian LGBT association Arcigay warns about a dangerous drift as Italian Parliament rejects anti-homophobia/anti-transphobia law, denouncing that “Italy has been squeezed without mercy by these insane politicians who do not have any respect for people’s lives and rights.”

Anna Paola Concia, a deputy from Democratic Party, the main opposition party, had prepared and presented a drift bill to the parliament against discrimination and punishment based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Italian Parliament voted against anti-homophobia/anti-transphobia bill with 293 no votes, reasoning that the bill is unconstitutional.

A similar bill has been proposed and rejected again two years ago by the parliament, which shows that discrimination against LGBT people will continue.

Voting results show the political and cultural mediocrity of the center-right”
In their press release Arcigay considers this act “as the latest outrage against LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people across the country carried out by a center-right majority composed of men and women of mediocre human, political and cultural profile”.

The Same Parliament Approves of the Ideas of Murderer Breivik
“Before Europe and the entire civilized world that in Italy there is a real democratic emergency” says Arcigay and adds:

“In this country a law that protects victims of homophobia is defined by the Parliament as unconstitutional - the same Parliament and political majority composed by parties whose leading members have defined as acceptable and sharable the ideas of Breivik, the murderer of Utoya.”

The Center Right Goes Hand-in-hand with Vatican
Although there were 250 yes votes; Vatican, president Silvio Berlusconi’s The People of Freedom party (PdL), coalition parties North League (La Lega) and Union of the Center (UdC) blocked the bill with 293 no votes.

“Italy is still obliged to meet the standards set by the Council of Europe”
The association reminded of what the European Council Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg has stated: “Even though the law didn’t pass, Italy is still obliged to meet the standards set by the Council of Europe on the issue of homophobia/transphobia.”

“The fight will go on”
Concia, who prepared the bill, said that she will lead the new bill proposal and the fight will continue. Concia said on the voting results that “the majority of the parliament proved themselves to be not on the side of violence victims by supporting violence and discrimination”.
