Montenegrin Ministry of Human and Minority Rights sent a letter of support to organizations dealing with LGBT human rights like LGBT Forum Progres and Juventas.
Letter signed by the Minister dr Suad Numanovic says:
„Ministry of Human and Minority Rights condemns hate speech related to LGBT population and other vulnerable groups, especially when it has been spread by means of media throughout publishing of texts containing elements of intolerance and hate. Furthermore, we also condemn all attempts of promotion of attitudes in an authoritarian manner, that instigate intolerance and hatred towards others at social events and other public events, which bring together a large number of citizens.
According to next year planned activities, the Ministry will direct its work on improvement of legislative framework protecting all human rights. First of all, it will adopt Strategy of Fight against Homophobia and Transphobia and implement the Action Plan provided within the Strategy. This can only be carried out in an open and partner cooperation with your organizations, as well as throughout the improvement of antidiscrimination legislation and its full consolidation with EU standards. Furthermore, in the area of legislative amendments, we plan mandatory participation of non-governmental organizations whose area of expertise imply protection of all forms of discrimination.“
Juventas uses this opportunity to welcome the reaction of the Ministry of Human and Minority Rights aiming to support invested efforts for Montenegro to become the example of respect of all citizens’ human rights no matter their personal characteristics. Therefore, we emphasize that is of great importance that human rights abuses of LGBT persons do not remain unnoticed and ignored as it has been the case so far, i.e. that all relevant state institutions take their role in recognizing, preventing, and repairing the consequences thereof.
