The final hearing of the case regarding Halil G., who attacked trans sex worker Derya Dağyolu in Ankara, causing her severe injuries and putting her life in danger, was held on May 21, 2024. After the prosecutor's recommendation for both parties to be sentenced for attempted murder, the court ruled that the defendant, Halil G., would be sentenced to 6 years and 3 months for attempted murder, with a reduction in the sentence.
Additionally, Halil G. was sentenced to 7 months and 15 days in prison and fined 6,000 TL for violating the Law on Firearms, Knives, and Other Tools.
In the case of Derya Dağyolu, who was stabbed by Halil G. and narrowly escaped death, the court imposed an 11-month and 7-day prison sentence for intentional injury, without applying self-defense provisions, and the sentence was suspended.
Derya Dağyolu’s lawyers had appealed the decision of the first-instance court.
The third hearing of the appeal was held at the Ankara Regional Court of Appeals, 1st Criminal Chamber. The hearing was also attended by We Will Stop Femicide Platform.
During the hearing, it was noted that the forensic report for Derya Dağyolu had not been included in the case file again. The court issued a travel ban for the defendant, Halil G., and the case was postponed to June 20.
Halil G. attended the hearing and claimed that Dağyolu attacked him
The defendant, Halil G., who had not attended previous hearings and was abroad, participated in today’s hearing. In his defense, the defendant claimed that Derya Dağyolu attacked him. "She injured me in the chest, and I resisted. A struggle occurred," he said.
In response to a question from the court panel, Derya Dağyolu stated:
"He is not telling the truth. As I mentioned in my previous statements, he attacked me with a knife, and I defended myself. I managed to escape by biting his hand. There is no way I could overpower him."
The prosecutor requested that the still-unprepared forensic report for Derya Dağyolu be awaited.
The court decided to wait for the forensic report and imposed a travel ban on the defendant, Halil G.
Derya Dağyolu was assaulted by the police at the Forensic Medicine Department
