At the meeting of the Parliament’s Committee on Equality of Opportunity for Women and Men, DEM Party İstanbul MP Özgül Saki questioned Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya about violence against women and LGBTI+ persons.

At the meeting of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Committee on Equality of Opportunity for Women and Men (KEFEK),on July 10th, which was also attended by Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya, İstanbul Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) MP Özgül Saki emphasized the issue of systematic male violence and expressed dissatisfaction with the responses to their parliamentary questions. Reminding the commission of the previous parliamentary questions, Saki stated:
“Hanefi Zengin, who used violence and harassment against women during Pride Marches, 8 March and 25 November when he was İstanbul Security Branch Director, was complained about by so many women that his hatred and violence against LGBTI+s was reflected in the whole press. Now he is working as a police chief in another district. It was said that an investigation was conducted, but we learned that it was in was closed. Women are not equal and free in this country. A president who says that women and men are not equal and who has all the powers in his hands decides everything. During Pride Month, LGBTI+s all over the world want to make their voices heard for their own existence and they are repeatedly subjected to violence by your law enforcement officers. What will you do to prevent this violence? Are there measures in place to protect women and LGBTI+s from violence by law enforcement officers when they seek their rights? Because they are under your responsibility.”
