CHP deputies said at a press conference held in the Parliament, “Avoiding the use of concepts related to gender has no place in everyday life.”

The deputies of the Republican People’s Party (CHP); Aylin Yaman, Kayıhan Pala, Ali Karaoba, and Murat Çan reacted to the Family and Social Services Ministry’s anti-gender and anti-LGBTI+ directive with a press conference held in the Parliament.
Highlights from the deputies’ joint statement are as follows, emphasizing that rejecting the concept of gender is unacceptable:
“The avoidance of using the concept of gender equality or any concepts related to gender has no place in everyday life, and scientifically, such a thing is not possible. The Ministry’s letter is a regression from gains based on international law and human rights. Gender is a reference point in designing public policies based on equality and serves the purpose of revealing inequalities and discrimination in society.”
“Gender equality means that individuals can live without discrimination based on their gender and enjoy equal rights. These rights are guaranteed by many international agreements. You cannot erase these internationally guaranteed agreements with a single official letter. Recently, the Ministry has added another statement, far from scientific accuracy, regarding gender identity and sexual orientation. This situation will do nothing but escalate homophobia and create a new social threat.”
