Speaking at the KEFEK meeting, Kaya said, “These are public service announcements that normalize discrimination and hatred against a segment of society.”
The Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) Commission on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men (KEFEK) meeting was held on November 14 with the participation of the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK). RTÜK made a presentation to the commission. Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Diyarbakır MP Adalet Kaya brought up the anti-LGBTI+ public service ads, the anti-LGBTI+ documentary “True Colors” broadcast by TRT World and the Big Family Meetings.
Emphasizing that anti-LGBTI+ public service announcements are criminal according to the Penal Code and openly use hate language, Kaya asked RTÜK, “What will you say about them?” Kaya also brought up the fine imposed last year on İrfan Değirmenci's program featuring Esmeray as a guest and said:
"Last year, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, İrfan Değirmenci's program on Halk TV was penalized because Esmeray was a guest on that day and you penalized Esmeray for saying ‘LGBTI+ children must be very happy to see me on the screen’. I'm talking about a program that lasted two and a half hours, a program in which women of different views and ages from different segments of society expressed themselves. What was it about this program that disturbed you?"
“These are contents that normalize hatred”
Kaya also brought the documentary “True Colors” by TRT World to the agenda of KEFEK. Kaya reminded that RTÜK advertised the anti-LGBTI+ documentary in question. Kaya continued his speech by asking about the public service announcements about the Big Family Meetings organized in Saraçhane:
"There is the Saraçhane rally, which is also a public service announcement. In fact, these are public service announcements that are completely hateful, that carry content that normalizes and normalizes discrimination and hatred against a section of society; this is also the case in terms of language."
RTÜK President left Kaya's questions about anti-LGBTI+ public service announcements and the documentary "True Colors" unanswered
RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin did not answer Kaya's questions about anti-LGBTI+ public service ads and TRT World's documentary “True Colors”.
Şahin responded to Kaya's question about the fine imposed on İrfan Değirmenci's program as follows, citing the article of the law:
"Regarding İrfan Değirmenci's statements, I can easily say this: Our law is clear, it is not possible in the current law that we do not see what is seen as a violation in that law as a violation."
