The latest hearing of the case regarding Ecem Seçkin, a trans woman sex worker killed at her residence in Azra Has Street (Bornova -İzmir) by her client Mustafa Fidan when she was 22 years old, was held on Friday, December 1.

İzmir Chief Prosecutor of the Republic Filiz Bulut filed a lawsuit against the arrested defendant Mustafa Fidan, who killed Ecem during the night hours on January 5, with the demand to be sentenced for intentional killing with premeditation, brutally or through torment in order to conceal an offense, destroy evidence, facilitate the commission of another offense or prevent the apprehension, carrying an unlicensed knife and qualified robbery with the use of a weapon, in residence, at night. The case was postponed to January 15, 2024.

Threat of detention by police

After the hearing, the activists of Colors of Resistance Izmir wanted to make a press statement with the rainbow flag, but the police prevented them by threatening to arrest them. Colors of Resistance Izmir announced the police’s illegal prevention as follows “After Ecem Seçkin’s trial, we faced police intervention because we wanted to make a video by unfurling the LGBTI+ flag. They said that we could not unfurl the flag because it was not in line with society’s sensitivity and general morality, and claimed that Ecem was not killed because she was a trans woman. They threatened to arrest us on the grounds of the ‘flag ban’, which has no legal basis. Their arbitrary practices cannot stop our struggle, the rainbow cannot be banned!”
