The Civil Society in the Penal System Association (CISST) held the eighth of Workshop on LGBTI+ Prisoners on Saturday, October 28, in İstanbul.

Within the scope of the workshop, discrimination in prisons based on gender identity and sexual orientation was discussed with 28 participants from various NGOs, professional chambers and bar associations.

“In the workshop we also had the opportunity to talk about many discrimination issues, such as LGBTI+ prisoners' access to hormones, the process of gender reassignment, de facto isolation in prisons without LGBTI+ wards,” says the CISST LGBTI+ in Prison team.

Measures to prevent discrimination were also discussed

The team members also added that they had organised an activity within the workshop: “Finally, we held an interactive workshop where we discussed the rights violations faced by LGBTI+ prisoners in areas such as accessing healthcare, accessing justice, deep poverty, de facto isolation, transfer, torture and ill-treatment, violence.”

Measures and mechanisms to prevent discrimination against LGBTI+ people in prisons were also discussed within the scope of the workshop.
