President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan targeted the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games in his meeting with Justice and Development Party (AKP) provincial presidents yesterday (July 30). Describing the “Last Supper” parody at the opening of the Olympic Games as “immoral,” Erdoğan targeted LGBTI+ community.

Stating that he had been invited to the opening ceremony however he had not attended because his grandson had said “Grandpa, don’t go. There is an LGBT show there,” Erdoğan continued as follows:

“The immorality staged at the opening of the Paris Olympic Games has once again highlighted the scale of the threat we face. Macron invited me and I said that I would come. However my 13-year-old grandson said, ‘Grandpa, don’t go. There’s an LGBT show going on there.’”

Stating that he would call the Pope regarding the opening show, Erdoğan used the term ‘LGBT lobby’ and said:

What was intended in Paris was a project to degrade human beings, who are equal creatures, to a level even lower than animals. The infamous scene in Paris offended not only the Catholic world and the Christian world but also us just as much. At the first opportunity, I will call Pope Francis to discuss the controversy. I will share with him the disrespect shown to the entire Christian world. The LGBT lobby has captured the West.”

In the news reflected in the French press, it was revealed that Erdoğan was not invited to the opening ceremony.

The Directorate of Religious Affairs also targeted the opening of the Olympic Games

The Directorate of Religious Affairs also targeted the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games over LGBTI+ issues. Referring to the opening as “a display of a perverted mentality,” the Presidency stated:

“One of the main approaches that disregard the material and spiritual reality, existential value, and dignity of human beings, and alienate them from their essence, is the ‘desexualization’ policies that constitute a basis for all kinds of corruption under the name of freedom of sexual orientation.”

In the statement, it was claimed that the LGBTI+ movement is not a call for freedom but “on the contrary, it is the buttress of dark imperialist ideologies that aim to detach human beings from the context of God, realm, purpose, wisdom, and responsibility, and turn them into objects of consumption in the vortex of a meaningless and aimless life.”

LGBTI+ persons were targeted by associating them with “pedophilia” in the statement made by the Presidency:

“The pedophilia and LGBT elements deliberately highlighted in the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics in France have clearly revealed the ugly face of global mischief centres. This mentality, which turns every platform into a propaganda tool, has declared war against human decency and dignity, beliefs, and values of societies.”

What happened?

On Friday night, 26 July, LGBTI+ representations took place at the opening night of the Paris Olympic Games. The show also included a metal horse galloping down the Seine with the Olympic flag and a heavy metal performance from Gojira introduced by a headless Marie Antoinette.
