Speaking at the "Strong Family with Mother, Strong Türkiye with Family" Program, President and AKP Chair Erdoğan targeted LGBTI+ individuals by saying, "We are taking the necessary measures to prevent the perverse movements called LGBT from corrupting our society.”
President and AKP Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan once again targeted LGBTI+ individuals after a month. Erdoğan spoke at the "Strong Family with Mother, Strong Türkiye with Family" Program. By saying, “We are engaged in an intense struggle against all kinds of misguided practices that make marriage more difficult,” Erdoğan equated LGBTI+ rights with alcohol and drug addiction, and said the following:
“We are engaged in an intense struggle against all kinds of misguided practices that make marriage more difficult, which are deliberately fueled by consumer culture. We are taking the necessary measures to prevent the perverse movements called LGBT from corrupting our society. Our uncompromising stance against plagues like alcohol, gambling, online betting, and drugs aims primarily to protect the family, especially women and children. Even though certain circles refuse to accept it, alcohol addiction is one of the main causes of domestic violence. Alcohol also lies at the root of many problems such as violence, crime, suicide, social issues, traffic accidents, and workplace problems.”
Erdoğan had also targeted LGBTI+ individuals at the KADEM General Assembly
On April 18, Erdoğan spoke at the 5th Ordinary General Assembly of the Women and Democracy Foundation (KADEM), held at the Atatürk Cultural Center, and had targeted LGBTI+ individuals.
Using phrases like “degenderization” and “perverse movements,” Erdoğan had said the following:
“The advocacy of degenderization policies, which even the West is now seeking ways to escape, is, if you notice, being carried out by the opposition in our country. While they can’t even pay their municipal staff, they shamelessly hand over the nation's resources to perverse movements. We all watch with astonishment the corruption emerging in the municipalities they have decorated with LGBT rags. Of course, the issue is not limited to the opposition’s betrayal alone; we are also facing the negative effects of a lifestyle encouraged by neoliberal culture. The institution of the family, which is the foundation of society, is under threat and danger both globally and in our country. We are living in a time when the family, the act of forming a family, and having children are being undermined like never before.”
