Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was backed 52 percent and Kılıçdaroğlu was backed 48 percent of voters at the first runoff election in the history of Republic. Erdoğan targeted LGBTI+s in his speech in İstanbul by accusing the opposition as “LGBT supporter”.
Second round of Presidential election was also completed. Current President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was elected as the 13th President according to the tentative results.
Republican People’s Party (CHP) General President and Nations Alliance Presidential candidate Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu increased his first round vote of 44,88 percent to 47,84.
And People’s Alliance candidate Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was elected as the President for the third time by increasing his first round vote of 49,52 percent to 52,16 on May 38th according to the tentative election results.
Erdoğan targeted LGBTI+s during his first statement made in front of his house in Kısıklı, İstanbul, as he did throughout the election process. In his speech, accompanied by Justice and Development Party Group Deputy Chairperson Özlem Zengin, Erdoğan said:
“Is CHP LGBT supporter, what about HDP (People’s Democratic Party) is it LGBT supporter, is İYİ (Good) Party LGBT supporter, or the small parties standing by them, are they LGBT supporters? So can LGBT infiltrate AK Party? What about the other members of People’s Alliance, can LGBT infiltrate them? We consider the family sacred. No one can defame family. Violence against women is forbidden by religion for us. No one can resort to it, we wring down their neck. We will do what we promised to our nation in the following period. We will also adhere to our principle of not making any promises that we cannot fulfill. And now I am heading Ankara with these feelings. This time we are putting a new face on the balcony speech and we will make it from the Külliye.”
Erdoğan made the traditionalistic balcony speech from the Presidential Complex for the first time. Addressing his supporters here, Erdoğan targeted Selahattin Demirtaş, imprisoned former co-chair of HDP by taking a harsher mode. At that moment, “Death sentence for Selo” slogans were chanted by the crowd.
Erdoğan didn’t directly speak of LGBTI+s within the scope of his speech at the Palace. He reiterated the rhetoric of “terror” and “deviant movements” which he adopted during the election campaign.
