At the Istanbul Trans Pride March held on Sunday, June 22, 46 trans+ activists were detained with police violence. One trans+ activist among the detained human rights defenders was injured in the leg due to police violence.

The detained rights defenders spent one night at the Istanbul Vatan Police Department and were released yesterday (June 23) from the Anadolu Courthouse.

Earlier in the day, even before the march began, five people were detained through ID checks (GBT), and judicial control measures along with an international travel ban were imposed on them. Trans+ activists welcomed their detained friends with applause and slogans. The chant “Where are you, my love? I’m here, my love!” was frequently heard. The police also intervened at the time of the welcome, demanding that no slogans be chanted. Additionally, the police prevented the display of the LGBTI+ flag. Despite all interventions and human rights violations, everyone who was detained on June 22 during the day was eventually released.

What happened at the Trans Pride March

The Trans Pride March, held with the theme of “Revolt,” took to the streets of Istanbul. Despite all attempts at obstruction, Trans+ rights defenders marched in Acıbadem.

Despite heavy police presence across the city, trans people and trans rights defenders gathered in Acıbadem and marched with a banner reading “Revolt/Serhildan” and trans flags.

After the march, the police violently detained a large number of trans rights defenders. Throughout the day, the police detained 46 rights defenders, most of whom were from Acıbadem. Of those detained during the day, 39 activists were taken into custody following the police attack after the march, while 3 people were detained in Kadıköy and 4 in Beyoğlu during ID checks (GBT).

According to a report by Sendika.org, the police confiscated banners and surrounded the area where the march took place with patrol vehicles. DEM Party deputies Kezban Konukçu and Özgül Saki protested against the detentions.

Additionally, in the press statement that could not be read during the Trans Pride March, it was stated that the march was dedicated to DEM Party deputy Sırrı Süreyya Önder, who passed away in recent months.
