The Family Institute came to the agenda with the ‘Action Plan for the Protection and Strengthening of the Family’, which targeted LGBTI+s as ‘harmful trends’ and a ‘desexualisation project’.

The Presidential Decree on the establishment of the Family Institute was published in the Resmi Gazete today. According to the decree signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan; The Family Institute, which is affiliated to the Ministry of Family and Social Services and headquartered in Ankara, was established.
According to the published Presidential Decree; the Institute will carry out ‘researches covering all ministry activities to protect and strengthen the family structure and values, to increase the social welfare of the family, to create data for policies related to women, children, disabled, elderly, martyrs’ relatives, veterans and veterans' relatives ’.
The duties and authorities of the Institute include "monitoring, evaluating and reporting scientific literature and research at national and international level “ and ”conducting scientific research and data analysis to determine demographic changes and trends and their possible effects on family structure and problem areas ’.
The Advisory Board of the Institute will consist of members from ministries and Religious Affairs
According to the decision, the Institute will consist of a General Directorate, a Board of Directors and an Advisory Board. The Advisory Board of the Institute will be chaired by the deputy minister to be appointed by the minister and will consist of two members from the ministry, one member each from the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of National Education, the Ministry of Health and the Presidency of Religious Affairs, and seven members determined from people who have studies related to the field of activity of the ministry, totalling 15 members.

The establishment of the Family Institute came to the agenda with the ‘Vision Document and Action Plan for the Protection and Strengthening of the Family’, which targeted LGBTI+'s with the expressions “harmful movements” and “desexualisation project”.
The Action Plan, which envisaged the cooperation of the Institute with universities, included the Family Institute with the following statements:
‘The Family Institute will be established to carry out comprehensive research activities and formulate policy recommendations to protect and strengthen the family structure and values and to increase the social welfare of the family.’
The Plan, which envisages the preparation of a strategy document targeting LGBTI+ s, includes the preparation of anti-LGBTI+ documentaries and the translation of existing publications into Turkish.
In addition, within the scope of the Action Plan, it is planned to ‘cooperate with countries, international organisations and family-oriented non-governmental organisations on the protection and strengthening of the family’.
Within the scope of the Action Plan, many institutions such as the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK), the Presidency of Religious Affairs, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Presidency of Foreign Affairs and national and local media organisations are expected to work in cooperation.
