Commenting on the blocking of Instagram, Hüseyin Yayman, Chairman of the Parliament's Digital Media Commission, claimed that "LGBT posts" encourage "desexualization".
Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Hüseyin Yayman, the chairman of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) Digital Media Commission and AKP Hatay MP Hüseyin Yayman announced that the commission will meet this week or next week with the agenda of shutting down Instagram.
Yayman targeted LGBTI+'s in his statement
In his statement, Yayman used the expressions "public order" and "Turkey's traditions" and said, "I believe that if Instagram and Meta comply with the rules in Turkey, this issue will be resolved much more easily."
Claiming that social media is "handled differently with some ideological, religious and value-loaded concepts," he said:
"Digital networks are places where everyone can express themselves freely. It is never right to treat this place differently with some ideological, religious and value-loaded concepts. On digital networks, violence against women, especially Meta, sexual offenses, cyber gambling... We are actually talking about the Ismail Heniyye issue, but the iceberg is actually behind the iceberg. Sexually explicit posts, the fight against addiction, the dissemination and encouragement of drugs, adolescent mobbing, marginalization, hate crimes... Unfortunately, neither Turkey nor the world talks about these issues. It deals with the issue from a much different point of view."
Yayman claimed that LGBT posts encourage "desexualization"
Yayman argued that "the government is against censorship and banning" and claimed that "desexualization" is encouraged on social media:
"The Republic of Türkiye is a state of law. We want all network providers to act in accordance with Turkish law. We never want double standards. It is never right to share posts by terrorist organizations on the one hand, and LGBT posts and desexualization on the other, while censoring posts by a person like Ismail Heniyye, whom this society values, is censored."
Yayman had also targeted LGBTI+ people in an interview with Yeni Şafak
Earlier before, Hüseyin Yayman evaluated the blocking of Instagram with the decision taken by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) to Yeni Şafak. Yayman criticized Instagram's removal of condolence messages about the assassinated Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, saying, "I support the decision." Yayman, complained about “posting LGBT-related content” on Instagram.
