Civil society and professional organizations in Diyarbakır continue their Human Rights Week activities. A press statement was made today at Rosa Women's Association as part of Human Rights Week.

In the joint statement of Diyarbakır Bar Association, Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖÇAV), Human Rights Association (İHD) Diyarbakır Branch, Rosa Women's Association, Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TİHV) and Chamber of Medicine, attention was drawn to rights violations and hate crimes against trans people.

“Trans people are exposed to the most severe forms of discrimination”

Lawyer Sidar Gülcan Özkan from Diyarbakır Bar Association LGBTI+ Rights Commission read the joint statement at the event. In speech, Özkan stated that trans people in Turkey have become the target of systematic discrimination and hate crimes and said, “The duty of the state is to protect the right to life of every individual.”

Drawing attention to the increase in hate speech and hate crimes targeting trans people in Turkey, Özkan said:

"Hate speech is not only a problem of expression, it is a dangerous tool that prepares the ground for hate crimes. Trans people are subjected to the most severe forms of discrimination, the cruelest forms of violence and are often murdered."

The rights-based organizations that came together in Diyarbakır called on public authorities during the Human Rights Week and concluded their statements with the following statements: “Hate speech is a crime, hate crimes are political and it is the responsibility of all of us to stop these inhumane acts.”
