According to the Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA), the indictment against Elif Akgül has been submitted to the court but has not yet been accepted. It was also learned that the indictment against Yıldız Tar, the Editor-in-Chief of KaosGL.org, is still with the prosecutor's office. The indictments are expected to be available within 15 days.
What happened?
On February 18, as part of the investigation launched against the Peoples' Democratic Congress (HDK), 53 people were detained, including Sema Barbaros, the Istanbul Provincial Chair of EMEP, Mehmet Saltoğlu, a member of the Central Executive Board of DEM Party, Halit Elçi and Ahmet Saymadi, members of the SYKP Central Committee, journalists Elif Akgül, Yıldız Tar, and Ercüment Akdeniz, screenwriter Ayşe Bengi, and artist Pınar Aydınlar.
Journalists Yıldız Tar, Elif Akgül, and Ercüment Akdeniz were arrested on charges of "membership in a terrorist organization." MLSA and Kaos GL lawyers argued that Yıldız Tar was targeted due to his journalistic activities and that there was no concrete evidence against him, emphasizing that his detention was unlawful.
In the objection petition, it was highlighted that Tar had been working as a journalist for many years and participating in public events, and it was argued that judicial control measures would suffice instead of detention. However, the court rejected the objection, deeming these reasons insufficient.
An application was also made to the Constitutional Court for Tar. The lawyers of the Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA) and Kaos GL, who represent Tar, emphasized in their petition that the journalist was arrested solely due to his press and civil society activities, and they stated that his fundamental rights had been violated.
