DEM Party Istanbul MP Özgül Saki made a statement regarding the attacks against LGBTI+'s during the Newroz celebrations in Istanbul and Izmir.
Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) MP Saki made the following statements on her social media account:
“Yesterday, LGBTI+ individuals were forced to leave the Newroz celebrations in Istanbul and Izmir due to verbal and physical attacks. It is crucial to acknowledge the visible rise in anti-LGBTI+ sentiments and recognize that the solution lies in our ongoing political struggle, both yesterday and today. Strengthening and expanding solidarity with LGBTI+ individuals in various arenas, including public forums, parliamentary debates, and street protests, is imperative. It is the responsibility of each of us to stand united against hate-driven politics.
At the event entrance, police were observed prohibiting the entry of rainbow flags belonging to the LGBTI+ community and feminist flags, while also scrutinizing traditional attire and preventing individuals wearing shalwar from entering. It is essential not to overlook the fact that those perpetrating violence against LGBTI+ individuals in mass gatherings align with the government’s hostile policies, which permeate society. The government and its affiliates promote fascist propaganda that fuels hostility towards Kurds, women, immigrants, and LGBTI+ individuals, contributing to a shift towards right-wing conservatism among the opposition.
We are engaged in a multifaceted struggle against these injustices. We will continue advocating for a dignified and equitable life, opposing hate-driven policies that perpetuate violence against women and LGBTI+ individuals, without wavering.”
