Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Kocaeli MP Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu discussed the 9th Judicial Package during the Prison Rights Violations and Agenda Evaluation Press Meeting. He also addressed issues concerning the pressures faced by LGBTI+ community, violations of freedom of expression, and instances of discrimination and targeting. Gergerlioğlu shared highlights from the press conference on X.

Gergerlioğlu’s full post on social media is as follows:

“The oppression, suppression of freedom of expression, discrimination, and targeting of LGBTI+ community in Turkey persist unabated. Government authorities, through their most vocal channels, brand the mere existence of LGBTI+ people as heretical, attempting to scapegoat them for our deep-seated social and economic challenges by claiming they ‘threaten the Turkish family.’ Demonstrations stoking hatred towards LGBTI+ communities, such as the ‘Great Family March’, have been organized as part of this agenda. There are alarming indications that the forthcoming constitution will only intensify pressure on LGBTI+ community, potentially leading to the closure of LGBTI+ organizations. This escalating repression not only affects the LGBTI+ community but also undermines the fabric of our society as a whole. The erosion of even one democratic right or freedom paves the way for further violations. As parents of LGBTI+ children, we are deeply troubled by these developments and fear for the safety of our loved ones. Therefore, we implore our respected representatives to acknowledge that the fundamental rights and freedoms of LGBTI+ people are human rights. We urge them to advocate for a constitution that champions liberation rather than prohibition and to prioritize this issue in the ongoing constitutional deliberations.”
