Keep On Keeping On Contemporary Art In Istanbul

TREIBSANDis a unique Contemporary Art space on DVD being curated by Susann Wintsch*. Volume 02 of TREIBSAND focuses on contemporary art in Istanbul and will be published in November 2012. Entitled ‘Devam Etmeye Devam’ in Turkish and ‘Keep On Keeping On’ in English it contains works of 33 artists. It presents works by artists of different generations raising questions about the history of the future, justice and ways of co-existing. Having been posed at all times, these issues develop ever since, expressed by ideas and aesthetics of the contemporary. The works in Volume 02 comprise a wide range of approaches like political to poetic, conceptual to narrative. They have been selected in close collaboration with the artist Necla Rüzgar** who lives and works in Ankara and Istanbul. 

The process of work involved for each Volume of TREIBSAND consists of investigating a major art metropolis in an effort to understand the artist praxis being part to its inventive potentiality. Over a period of two years Susann Wintsch visits scores of artists studios, galleries, art institutions in order the project to evolve and mature. During this process she collaborates with an internationally acclaimed artist having comprehensive knowledge about the metropolis’s progressive agile art community.

 

The process comes to an end with a curated exhibition on DVD. It presents an elaborate selection of art works (Photography, audio and video works) as well as monographic essay films on a succession of works (Paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations and performance) by an individual artist chosen by the curators. The DVD is accompanied by a collateral booklet providing information about the participating artists and their works in English, German and the language of the metropolis.

 

TREIBSAND’s exhibitions are on DVD providing visual memory spaces for contemporary art. Displayed on a DVD they travel easily around the globe carrying artistic knowledge both for professional use and for any person having access to a computer, laptop or a DVD player.

 

Volume 02 of TREIBSAND will be launched in SALT Galata Istanbul 2^nd of November 2012, and be available in museums, bookshops as well as for ordering online at www.treibsand.ch

* Susann Wintsch, born 1967, studied Art History and Comparative Literature at the University of Zurich. She teaches and lectures about Art History, Theory and Contemporary Art at Zürcher Hochschule der Künste ZHdK, Dept. Cultural Analysis and Art Education. On behalf of a national research project at ZHdK she introduced a new magazine for artists on DVD called COMPILER, which subsequently developed into TREIBSAND contemporary Art Space on DVD. Till date she has released “Was ist Kunst, Marinela Kozelj” (COMPILER, Ex-Jugoslavia) in collaboration with the artist Milica Tomić (Serbia/Vienna) in 2003. “Analysing While Waiting – For Time to Pass: Contemporary Art in Tehran” was released in 2007 in collaboration with the artist Parastou Forouhar (Tehran/ Frankfurt a.M.). The forthcoming Volume “Keep on Keeping on / Devam Etmeye Devam: Contemporary Art in Istanbul” curated together with Necla Rüzgar will be released in November 2012. In September 2013 Susann Wintsch will be curating a broad exhibition on Contemporary Positions in Iranian Art in collaboration with Museum Rietberg in Zurich. Susann Wintsch is chairwoman of stromereien, Zurich Performance Festival, and has been a member at the Commission of Public Art in the county of Aargau, Switzerland, for many years now.

 

** Necla Rüzgar, born 1972 in Tunceli, Turkey, lives and works in Ankara and Istanbul. She received her doctoral degree from Hacettepe University, Painting Department, where she continues working as Assoc. Professor. Her works have been exhibited at various institutions, including Depo, İstanbul (2012); Goethe Institute, Ankara (2011); Akademie der Künste, Berlin (2009); Chung Ang University, Seoul (2006); Limlip Museum, Goungju (2004); 22nd International Alexandria Biennale,Alexandria (2003) and Unesco Center, Thessaloniki (2000). Rüzgar recently had a solo exhibition entitledDamage Diagnosis, Gallery OUTLET Istanbul in 2011.
