On June 9th, police attacked the press statement and Pride March planned to take place in front of the Ulus Monument in Eskişehir. Ten LGBTI+ activists were detained and subjected to torture. Four of the detained activists were referred to court with a demand for arrest. The Eskişehir Pride Week Committee announced on their social media accounts that all detained LGBTI+ activists have been released, stating, “Our Pride is stronger than torture.”
“Our pride is stronger than torture. We LGBTI+s won against 24-hour police violence. We took back our friends who were detained and tortured overnight due to the disproportionate intervention of the Eskişehir police. We will not allow the LGBTI+ phobic policies of the Turkish government! As long as we exist, cities, streets, and squares are ours. LGBTI+ rights are human rights. Resistance and victory against illegal bans, transphobia, and homophobia are ours. We would like to thank all institutions, human rights defenders, lawyers, press workers, parties, city and country opposition, and all our stakeholders who spread the LGBTI+ struggle in other cities and countries. It is now time to hold all police officers who inflicted violence on us to account through legal means. The police will be prosecuted!
We look forward to welcoming you at the 5th Eskişehir Pride Week.”
