The Turkish Grand National Assembly Child Rights Subcommittee has released its report on the impact of the 6 February 2023 earthquakes on children. The report controversially claims that LGBTI+ associations entered the earthquake-affected areas with the alleged intent of targeting children.
According to a news report of Kısa Dalga, the report, which is slated for discussion next week by the Human Rights Investigation Commission, highlights the activities of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the earthquake zone. The report argues that the operations of these NGOs should be closely monitored and controlled. Specifically, it accuses LGBTI+ associations of operating in the disaster area with ulterior motives and without proper supervision. The report states:
“We have been informed that NGOs found to be working in this direction have been restricted in their activities in the region. It has been evaluated that organizations that do not act in line with the principle of volunteerism and that are in the field with hidden agendas other than aid should be monitored more effectively in the earthquake region.”
Justice and Development Party (AKP) Kocaeli MP Radiye Sezer Katırcıoğlu, Chairperson of the Commission, further targeted specific organizations in her statement to DHA. She singled out Rosa Women’s Association and Rengarenk Umutlar Derneği (Colorful Hopes Association) both active in the disaster zone, and stated:
“We are against this. As a mother, as a son of this homeland and as a religious person, we are against all kinds of dangers and threats that support the destruction of the generation.”
