“As LGBTI+’s, we oppose this anti-democratic attitude and demand the immediate reinstatement of the elected officials”

Social Policy Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation Studies Association (SPoD), Trans Pride Week Committee, Colors of Resistance, Queer Baykuş, Demir Leblebi and Young LGBTI+ Association reacted against the appointment of trustees to Batman, Halfeti and Mardin metropolitan municipalities by the Ministry of Interior on November 4.
SPoD said, “As LGBTI+'s, we oppose this anti-democratic attitude and demand the immediate reinstatement of elected officials.” Istanbul Trans Pride Week said, “We trans people know that the genders that are forcibly assigned to our bodies and the trustees appointed to local governments are the products of the same mentality.”
Young LGBTI+ Association said, “As we know from past trustee appointments, trustee policies bring practices that stop the work of municipalities on women, youth and LGBTI+, cut the municipality's ties with civil society, and ignore the demands and will of the people.”
What happened?
A trustee was appointed to Esenyurt Municipality on October 31 following the arrest of Ahmet Özer, who was nominated as a candidate from the Republican People's Party (CHP) as part of the urban consensus in Esenyurt district of Istanbul and elected mayor in the local elections held in March. Today (November 4), the Ministry of Interior announced the appointment of trustees to the DEM Party-controlled Mardin Metropolitan Municipality, Batman Municipality and Halfeti Municipality in Şanlıurfa.
