LGBTI+ rights activist Iris Mozalar, who detained on July 10th due to social media posts regarding the attacks on Syrian refugees, was brought before the judge on July 11th and arrested by the Criminal Court of Peace.

LGBTI+ activist and member of the Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP), İris Mozalar, had been detained on July 10th during a raid on her home in İstanbul.
According to the news report of Tuğçe Yılmaz from Bianet; Mozalar, who announced her detention on her social media accounts, was referred to the Criminal Court of Peace yesterday with a request for arrest.
The reason for Mozalar’s detention relates to her social media posts following attacks on Syrian-owned businesses and vehicles in Kayseri on June 30. The attacks occurred after allegations surfaced of a Syrian man assaulting a child.
In her posts, Mozalar had stated that she was against attacks against refugees.
Mozalar, who was brought to Çağlayan Courthouse for her statement at noon yesterday, was referred to the Criminal Court of Peace after the press prosecutor took her statement. Mozalar was arrested by the 9th Criminal Court of Peace under the article 216 of Penal Code of Turkey; “publicly provoking hatred or hostility in one section of the public against another section.”
