Prof.Dr. Şahika Yüksel and Dr. Seven Kaptan defined the troubles of gay and bisexual adolescents.

The 4th Symposium against Discrimination which organized by Kaos GL Association, Turkish Medical Association, Psychiatric Association of Turkey and Health and Social Service Worker Union continued on its last day at 13th December.

The troubles of gay and bisexual adolescents were discussed at the session in which Prof.Dr. Şahika Yüksek and Dr. Seven Kaptan made a presentation.

Principles of working with adolescents

Şahika Yüksel who made the first presentation listed the principles of working with adolescents:

  • Having met with adolescent, talking and comprehending is the key.
  • It is better to know family apart from adolescent
  • In the sequel, a meeting which covers whole family should be conducted.
  • It is a must to be respectful to adolescent’s experiences.

Yüksel Kaptan handed out “Guide to meet with LGB adolescents and their families” to participants.

“Can’t adolescents be free? They are free individuals and we, as health care professionals, have to pay attention to their needs in this perspective.”

Yüksel also told that LGB families are classified at three different aspects; first is the ones in cooperation, second is anxious and third one is potentially harmful.

Developmental stages of sexual orientation identity

A presentation called “Developmental stages of sexual orientation identity” was made by Seven Kaptan and here are the highlights:

Stage 1: Sensitization

Lack of interest to same sex, feelings of being diverged from peers.

Stage 2: Identity confusion

Possibility of being gay, conflict with heterosexual identity, denial, confusion, repressing sexual thoughts on same sex, repressing own sexual identity and praising heterosexuality, behaving like heterosexual intentionally.

Stage 3: Tolerance towards the identity

Accepting the real identity, praising, accepting sexual and emotional necessities, socializing and non-resistance.

Stage 4: Acceptance

No more tolerance but only acceptance.

Stage 5: Being proud of identity

Separating people as gays and heterosexuals and condescending heterosexuals.

Stage 6: Sexual Identity Synthesis

End of separation and integrated selfdom.
