“Murders of trans women cannot be simplified!”

In the hearing of the Hande Buse Şeker case held at the appeal court on November 6, the court rejected the aggravated life sentence request. LGBTI+'s reacted to the decision of the court of appeal.

In the Hande Buse Şeker case, the prosecutor appealed the life sentence given by Izmir 4th High Criminal Court to the defendant police officer Volkan Hicret. The hearing on the appeal was held on November 6. The court rejected the lawyers' request for an aggravated life sentence for the defendant Volkan Hicret. It characterized the murder as a simple act of murder.

LGBTI+’s reacted to the decision of the Court of Appeal in the Hande Buse Şeker case.

Reactions are as follows:

Demir Leblebi: The crime of police officer Volkan Hicret, who sexually assaulted and murdered trans woman Hande Buse Şeker, was determined as “the simple form of the act of killing”. We do not accept the court's rejection of the life imprisonment demand against the perpetrator; you will be held accountable!

Colors of Resistance: It's been 6 years since Hande Buse Şeker was murdered, we haven't forgotten the murderous police officer Volkan Hicret, who took power from the state, not even for a day! We call out to the court of appeal that rejected the request for aggravated life imprisonment; MURDER by subjecting to sexual violence is not equal to 'simple' murder. You are after exonerating a murderer, you are after devaluing trans lives, but we will not let it go. On November 20, on the way to the Day of Remembrance of Trans Victims of Hate Crime, we say; Hande Buse Şeker is our rebellion! We will hold the murderers to account!

Istanbul Trans Pride Week: In the Hande Buse Şeker case, the prosecutor appealed the life sentence given by the court to uniformed torturer Volkan Hicret to the Court of Appeal and the court rejected the request for an aggravated life sentence.

The deliberate murder of a trans woman by a torturer in uniform after being subjected to sexual violence and extortion is not simple murder. It is the deliberate murder of a torturer who is sure that the system will reward him with impunity.

May the system in which you murdered Hande Buse Şeker and many others, and the impunity rewards you provide to the murderers, sink to the ground. We trans people will continue to exist with the breath of our friends, we will ask for the account of every trans you murdered.
