Speaking at a meeting of the Population Policies Board, Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz attributed the decline in fertility rates to “desexualization”. Yılmaz also said that new legal arrangements will be made.
The Population Policies Council, which was established by presidential decree last month, convened for the first time. Ministers and AKP MPs attended the meeting at the Presidential Complex.
Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz made a presentation before the board meeting. In the presentation, which was also open to the press, Yılmaz complained about the declining fertility rate.
In his speech, Yılmaz used the term “desexualization”, which is frequently used by the government to target LGBTI+ persons. Yılmaz labeled LGBTI+s as a “threat to the family”, as in President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's speech declaring 2025 as the Year of the Family.
“We have to carefully evaluate the increasing attacks on family values through global media and social media channels and the systematic efforts to desexualize societies,” Yılmaz said.
New legal regulations are on the way
Yılmaz added that the board will prepare a special action plan and new legal arrangements will be made. The board will work jointly with ministries. Yılmaz also signaled that they will take steps against cesarean births.
“I would like to express that we will also attach great importance to our education, culture and communication policies that emphasize our values against the global attacks aimed at weakening and desexualizing our family structure. We will work decisively against the factors that pose a threat to the continuation of healthy generations, especially the dissolution of the family institution, the decrease in the fertility rate, and the trend of desexualization,” Yılmaz added.
Yılmaz also argued that the Population Policy Council is vital for “national survival”.
Erdoğan targets LGBTI+ people, announces 2025 as “Family Year”
Earlier this week President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made a speech after the cabinet meeting. In his “Address to the Nation” speech, Erdoğan again targeted LGBTI+ people and their rights.
Stating that they listened to the presentations of the ministers of Family, Trade and Transportation at the cabinet meeting, Erdoğan said, “A strong society is only possible with strong families. However, we are facing serious challenges in this regard. The desexualization policies promoted by global evil centers are well known to everyone. Today, the LGBT issue is one of the most serious threats to the existence of the family”.
Referring to the declining fertility rate, Erdoğan described this as an “existential threat” and reiterated his call for “at least three children”.
Erdoğan announced that they have decided to declare 2025 as the “ Family Year” and that they will carry out comprehensive studies “for the protection and strengthening of the family structure” throughout the year.
