Social Democrat Party MP Mogens Jensen asked a parliamentary question to European Council Committee of Ministers in order to question the situation of the rights of LGBTIs in Turkey.

Jensen brought the Ankara Governorship’s ban on LGBTI events on the grounds of “social sensitivities and sensibilities”, “protection of public health and morality” and “protection of the rights and freedoms of the others” to the European Council Committee of Ministers arena.

"What will Turkey do to ensure the freedom of assembly and expression"

In the written question, Jensen asked the Committee of Ministers to request information from the Turkish government on what the government will do to ensure that Turkey respect the European Convention on Human Rights and the democratic rights of freedom of assembly and freedom of expression.

You may find the full text of the written question as follows:

“On 18 November 2017 the Ankara governor’s office banned all LGBTI events within the province in an indefinite period via a statement. Cancellations of events in Izmir, Bursa, Kocaeli, Mardin and Istanbul followed the Ankara ban. Film screenings, exhibitions, forums, panels and meetings by LGBTI groups are among the banned activities.”

On this background, I would like to ask the Committee of Ministers to request information from the Turkish government on what the government will do to ensure that Turkey respect the European Convention on Human Rights and the democratic rights of freedom of assembly and freedom of expression. “
