26th Assembly of Women’s Shelters and Solidarity Centers, which started out with the slogan “A World without Shelters”, was held in İzmir. A statement for justice in the case of Hande Buse Şeker was also made at the meeting hosted by the Izmir Women’s Solidarity Association.

Reyhan Gümüşkaya from Izmir Women’s Solidarity Association said the following to emphasise that they are close followers of the case of Hande Buse Şeker:

“Hande Buse Şeker was a sex worker trans woman living in İzmir. A police officer named Volkan Hicret killed Hande Buse Şeker with his service weapon at Şeker’s home on January 9, in 2019, while he was off  duty. Police officer Volkan Hicret killed Şeker, blackmailed her and sexually assaulted her after the murder. He also injured her friend at home.

In today’s hearing of the Hande Buse Şeker case, which was reopened after the verdict was overturned, although the Forensic Medicine Institution finally prepared the report and uploaded it to the system on 20 September, the file was not sent to the court by post for more than a month. As a result, no verdict was returned today and the case was postponed to December 5, at 10 a.m.

We are the close followers of the case.”
