Both Minister of Family Göktaş and President Erdoğan targeted LGBTI+'s at the introductory meeting of the Family Year. Erdoğan said, ‘The sanctity of the family institution is the primary target of the desexualisation policies in which LGBT is used as a battering ram.’

Following the designation of 2025 as the ‘Family Year’ at the last cabinet meeting, the Family Year Promotion Programme was held today at the Beştepe National Congress and Culture Centre in the Presidential Complex. The public service announcement prepared for the ‘Family Year’ was broadcast during the programme.
Family Minister targeted LGBTI+'s
Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş spoke first in the programme. In speech, Göktaş targeted LGBTI+s with the expressions ‘desexualisation’ and ‘harmful movements’. Göktaş said that family values are being targeted and said:
"Ancient family values are being targeted. There is a global and systematic attack that imposes desexualisation. Harmful trends and habits negatively affect all family members, especially our children. Protecting the family institution against these challenges is a greater responsibility for us than ever before."
Erdoğan announced the Family Year programme
Following Göktaş, President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke at the Family Year promotion programme. Erdoğan targeted LGBTI+s with the expressions of ‘desexualisation policies’, ‘deviant ideologies’ and ‘harmful movements’.
Reminding that 2025 was determined as the 'Family Year’ at the last cabinet meeting, Erdoğan stated that they will ‘support the work with efficient and effective population policies’. Referring to the establishment of the Family Institute and the Population Policies Board, Erdoğan said:
"The Population Policies Board will develop short, long and medium-term strategies for a healthy population structure. The Institute, on the other hand, will carry out scientific, academic and policy-making activities regarding the family, which we see as a matter of survival for our nation."
Referring to Article 41 of the Constitution, Erdoğan used the following expressions in his speech targeting LGBTI+'s:
"It is also our common responsibility to protect our children and young people from harmful currents, poisonous thoughts and deviant ideologies that threaten our family and social structure. We are literally living in strange times. Neoliberal cultural currents penetrate all over the world."
Erdoğan equated LGBTI+s with Zionism and fascism
Speaking about the content published on digital platforms, Erdoğan said, "TV series and broadcasts on digital platforms cause irreparable processes such as cultural erosion and identity erosion. These contents, which are served consciously, deliberately and persistently, lead to the gaining of space for LGBT and other non-factual movements, especially the ideology of desexualisation.’
Erdoğan, who equated LGBTI+ rights with ‘Zionism’ and ‘fascism’ and described the LGBTI+ movement as ‘bullying’, said the following:
"At this point, we can see this very well. The primary target of the desexualisation policies in which LGBT is used as a battering ram is the sanctity of the family institution. This anomaly, which was initially intended to be legitimised as a personal choice, has now turned into a fascist imposition. Criticism of LGBT is immediately silenced, just like justified criticism of Zionism. Anyone who defends nature, morality and the family is subjected to heavy pressure and condemned to poverty by the musketeers of global culture."
Referring to the closure of the gaming platform Roblox without naming names, Erdoğan claimed that similar platforms target children.
Work will be carried out with the Organisations of Islamic Cooperation and Turkic States
‘We will further strengthen this stance in the coming period,’ Erdoğan said, adding that they will work together with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Organisation of Turkic States and other international organisations:
"We are one of the rare countries and leaders who object to this climate, which is intensifying day by day, including the UN General Assembly. We will further consolidate this stance in the coming period. We will decisively continue to react to the policies of de-sexing that corrupt the individual, family and society respectively. No matter what anyone says. Turkey's stance on this issue is clear. There will be no step back. Our struggle within the UN is already known. We are extending our efforts to other international organisations, particularly the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Organisation of Turkic States. Every position to be gained in the face of global desexualisation policies is unquestionably a great success for the future of humanity. I believe that our relevant institutions, especially academia, media, culture, arts and civil society will take more active responsibility in this regard. I would like to remind that local governments should not give a premium to these movements that attack the carrier columns of our national existence."
