Training called “Lawyers’ Network Against Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity” took place in the western city of İzmir on Saturday. 20 lawyers working on LGBT issues shared their experiences during the training.  
 
Hate Crimes
Lawyer of Lambdaİstanbul, SPoD and Kaos GL Associations, Fırat Söyle made a presentation on how justice treats hate crimes following the examples of Baki Koşar and Ahmet Yıldız cases.
 
Söyle underlined that violations of LGBT’s rights continue in courtroom, telling that murder of Ahmet Yıldız is being considered as an ordinary judicial case.  
 
Discrimination at the Workplace
Pointing at the problems LGBT people face at the workplace, Söyle told about Referee Halil İbrahim Dinçdağ case and how his military exemption report resulted in discrimination based on sexual orientation at his workplace.
 
Law of Misdemeanors
Lawyer of Pink Life Association, Ahmet Toköz made a presentation on Law of Misdemeanors and torture and mistreatment towards trans women. Toköz explained how the law is applied arbitrarily to trans women and that courts are indifferent for investigating “proofs” if fines are objected.
 
Trainings for the Lawyers’ Network will continue in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır on 2 March. The trainings are funded by the Netherlands Embassy and Embassy of the United States.
