Turkish Medical Students Association (TurkMSIC) invited Belgin Günay and Yasemin Bahar from Inter Dayanışma (Inter Solidarity) to an online event, in order to hear the needs of intersex people and their medical expectations.

TurkMSIC and Inter Dayanışma came together Kaos GL - News Portal for LGBTI+

Medical students from all over Turkey, from Kars to Balıkesir, posed questions to Inter Dayanışma activists, within the scope of the online event held on November 8th Inter*sex Solidarity Day. The activists Belgin Günay and Yasemin Bahar raised students’ knowledge and awareness about intersex issues by answering their questions and they also mentioned the problems experienced by intersex people at the hospitals, talked about their expectations and discussed their recommendations.

Günay and Bahar pointed out that the medical students and rising generation of doctors have a great responsibility to make hospitals and medical environments safer for intersex people and this may if and only be achieved by increasing communication and coordination with intersex rights defenders.

The questions addressed to Günay and Bahar also included the problems faced by intersex people in their daily life, as well as the origin of intersex as a concept. Exclusion and fetishization of intersex people, and disregard of their mental health and personal will in case of receiving medical care, were the issues drawn attention at the online event.

Activities of Inter Dayanışma for university students will continue in the following weeks with a meeting gathering LGBTI+ communities at universities.
