Human rights violations of LGBT people in Turkey will be evaluated in Geneva during the Universal Periodic Review pre-session of Turkey tomorrow.

Ezgi Kocak from Kaos GL Association and Zeynep Bilginsoy from LGBTI News Turkey will both make presentations on equality and non-discrimination, right to life and security, justice and impunity as well as refugees and asylum seekers during the pre-session of Turkey on December 3.

Kocak and Bilginsoy have prepared the report “Human Rights Violations of LGBT Individuals in Turkey” and an infographic on LGBT hate murders between 2010 and 2014. They currently pay visits to consulates and Permanent Missions in Geneva to share their recommendations regarding sexual orientation and gender identity.

Turkey did not implement the recommendations it accepted

The Universal Periodic Review is a unique process which involves a review of the human rights records of all UN Member States. Member States are allowed to make recommendations to the country reviewed to improve its human rights records.

At the first cycle of the review in 2010, Turkey accepted recommendations by Canada, Norway and the Netherlands for non-discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. However, Turkey did not take any concrete steps regarding the recommendations.
