University administrations intimidate LGBTİ+ protests on campuses Kaos GL - News Portal for LGBTI+

University administrations continue to launch investigations against students who participated in protests following the detention and subsequent arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on March 19.

Recently, eight students at Koç University were subjected to disciplinary investigations for painting the stairs of the Henry Ford Building in rainbow colors to mark Pride Month.

Speaking to Can Öztürk from T24, one of the students said: "The footage in the file shows us walking through the corridors and moving between classrooms on the night the stairs were painted. That’s all. They have no concrete evidence of the actual painting. It’s entirely arbitrary."

Investigation at Hacettepe University over “Family Year” protest

Another investigation has come from Hacettepe University. One of the reasons cited for the investigation was a statement made on campus opposing the anti-LGBTQ+ draft law.

In a joint statement issued by Hacettepe University student groups, they noted that the reasons listed in the investigation files included participation in the “Family Year, but the Resistance Year” press statement and entering the Yıldız Amphitheater, where the May Day Forum was held. The statement read:

“Investigations against students exercising their constitutional right to protest must be withdrawn. Mechanisms to prevent harassment and violence on campus should be activated, and the Gender Equality Unit (CİTÖB) should be made operational.”
