Health and Social Service Workers Union (SES) made a press statement regarding the anti-LGBTI+ attack against the March 8 leaflet at Okmeydanı Oral and Dental Health Hospital.
The press release outlined the following incidents:
“On March 18, Dentist M. Ş. not only tore and discarded the March 8 leaflet of our union, which was prepared in accordance with the Law no 4688 (on Public Officials’ Trade Unions and Collective Agreements) and displayed on the notice board in the common resting area of the Surgery clinic in Okmeydanı Oral and Dental Health Hospital, but also vandalized public property by forcibly removing the board from the wall and damaging it. In addition, he engaged in provocative behavior, using loud and derogatory language against our union, women, and LGBTI+ individuals. In response to this, a member of our union, a female healthcare worker on duty at the time, filed a report against the individual and submitted it to the chief physician.
On March 25, when our workplace representatives intended to approach M. Ş. to hear his side of the issue, they coincidentally encountered him in the elevator. In the confined space, where patients were present, he once again raised his voice, struck the elevator, used profanity, made threats, and spewed hateful remarks. He was subsequently removed from the elevator by a hospital worker.
As the Health and Social Service Workers’ Union, we firmly believe that the struggle for democracy and labor rights are intertwined. We insist on life and freedom in the face of this and all other attempts to propagate hate speech. These actions seek to disrupt public order, peace, and workplace harmony, propagate hate speech, incite societal divisions and hostility towards specific groups, and publicly promote animosity among workers based on differences, posing a potential threat to public order.”
