Women and LGBTI+s gathered in front of Süreyya Opera House in Kadıköy, Istanbul on November 5 (yesterday) to protest the appointment of trustees to Esenyurt, Mardin, Batman and Halfeti Municipalities.
According to bianet's Tuğçe Yılmazı's report, the demonstration was organized with the call of Women Together Strong and the slogans “Women and lubunyas against trustees”, “Jin jiyan azadî” and “Gülistan Sönük is our will” were chanted. Police blockaded women and LGBTI+ people and prevented journalists. During the protest, police officers tried to detain Mesopotamia Agency reporter Yeşim Tükel.
Women and LGBTI+'s read the press statement despite all the police preventions. Here are the lines from the press statement:
"We know very well this mentality that does not accept ‘no’ as no, that disregards our rights. This mentality that disregards women's 'no' and tries to crush it, also disregards the will of the Kurdish people and tries to crush it with trustees."
"This is not the first time we are experiencing this. In recent years we have learned very well what a trustee means, especially for women, because municipalities and municipalism are directly related to daily life and the management of the spaces where this life is carried out. In these spaces, in life, we women are also present. Whether daily life is carried out in an egalitarian manner or not, the attitude of the local administration on this issue deeply affects our lives."
