Yeniden Refah Party launched a video saying “If there is no morality, there is LGBT! We will eliminate perverted organizations from our city!” as an election promise, and sparked social media outcry.
The race to target LGBTI+ people and their rights, which has become a tradition in every election period, has started again.
Yeniden Refah (New Welfare Party) was the first political party to put LGBTI+s on its agenda ahead of the local elections in March. As part of its “Moral Municipality” campaign, the party claimed that LGBTI+ people are “immoral”. In the publicity film it released with the slogan “If there is no morality, there is LGBT”, it targeted LGBTI+ freedom of association with the following words:
“If there is no morality, there is LGBT! We will eliminate perverted organizations from our city!”
Yeniden Refah’s ad drew backlash on social media. X users criticised the party for targeting LGBTI+ people.
