Doğan Bekin, Istanbul MP of the extreme Islamist Yeniden Refah Party, held a press conference at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey yesterday. Bekin continued his party's anti-LGBTI+ stance by saying that they will support the draft amendments to the Civil Code and Penal Code that target LGBTI+ persons.

Upon the question of journalists about the draft, Bekin said:

"We are waiting for this to come to the General Assembly. When it comes, our policy is clear. We would like to express that we will not step back from our policy in this regard. We have always put forward a strong will to protect Turkey's spiritual values and family structure and we will continue to do so."

If the draft law is enacted, the expression ‘biological sex’ will be added to the Criminal Code, the visibility of LGBTI+ expressions in the public sphere will be penalised and legal procedures regarding the gender affirmation process will become more difficult.
