“Anyone can make a movie if they want”

KaosGL.org correspondents from seven different cities of Turkey came together for cinema workshop. Filming and montage techniques, and basic principles of photography and cinema were discussed in the event.

LGBTI+ human rights defenders and KaosGL.org volunteer correspondents from Adana, Ankara, Bursa, Çanakkale, İstanbul, İzmir and Mersin have met in the workshop on cinema, filming and editing in the scope of oral history studies. 

Under the coordination of Kaos GL Media and Communication Program, Oral History Study Group formed in December 2017 have come together to discuss the highlights of filming and editing in Adana Divan Hotel on August 15.

Tufan Şimşekcan and Ozan Şihay from Atom Film who have been working on filming and editing of full-length and short movies told about the basic principles of photography, editing and montage.

Three unities: Person, time and place

In the first part of the chain of workshops consisting of five sessions, the groups had a discussion on the popular movies and documentaries.

Telling about the history of cinema rooting in the ancient times, Şimşekcan underlined the similarities with the contemporary cinema:

“The only thing developed since then is content and technique. We all can do filming. We, actually, make movies in our 15-second-Instagram stories. The important factors are lighting, sound, editing and when to start and end the record.

Şimşekcan highlighted Aristo’s ‘three unities’, and told about the peak point and conflict in documentaries through person, time and place.

At the end of the workshop, participants practiced what they learnt during the workshop with some group works on photography, filming and editing.
