METU Gender Studies Club was planning to organize an event at METU; however, Middle East Technical University (METU) Rectorate has banned the event due to the “relation of rainbow-LGBT”. After the ban, METU LGBTI+ Solidarity Group has issued a call for solidarity.
METU Rectorate also banned METU Pride Events planned to be organized in the campus last year by showing Ankara Governorate’s ban on LGBTI+ events.
METU LGBTI+ Solidarity reminded in their statement that METU as a university making researches and studies on gender equality is also a party of Effective Gender Equality in Research and the Academia (EGERA). They also stated that cancelling of an event, where LGBTI+ families would talk about their experiences, with the reason of “the relation of LGBTI+ and rainbow” is a academic intervention on gender equality.
Emphasizing that METU administration has discriminative attitudes, METU LGBTI+ Solidarity said: “In these days when we need to feel good, we will come together and continue to spread love”
