The Rights Violations and Discrimination Against LGBTI+ Students in Universities 2024 Report prepared by ÜniKuir Association has been published. The report aims to document the discrimination, systematic rights violations and social reflections of LGBTI+ students in their academic, social and individual lives in 2024.

The study, based on media case follow-up, support applications to ÜniKuir, data from the rights violation reporting form and focus group discussions with LGBTI+ students, provides a comprehensive analysis of violations at universities.

Censorship practices continued

According to the report; LGBTI+ students were subjected to discriminatory treatment, hateful discourse and psychological violence by academics, administrative staff and other students. Other students were the main perpetrators of rights violations against LGBTI+ students, followed by university administration and academics.

In addition; most of the LGBTI+ students who were subjected to rights violations at universities did not report these violations to any authorised institution, thinking that they would not get any results.

In addition, interventions against the rainbow flag on campuses, disciplinary investigations and censorship practices on campus continued.

Students were expelled from dormitories and threatened to be exposed to their families

The report also drew attention to freedom of assembly and association. In 2024, the official status of LGBTI+ communities was not recognised and activities were prevented.

LGBTI+ students also faced inequality in education in 2024. According to the report, discriminatory academic practices against LGBTI+ students continued, while gender equality and LGBTI+ rights were ignored in course content.

Another title the report draws attention to is violations of the right to housing. LGBTI+ students were expelled from dormitories or forced to leave dormitories and were deprived of their right to accommodation because of their identities. LGBTI+ students were threatened by police and security officers to be labelled and exposed to family members.

Difficulties in accessing health services

Access to health services was also one of the main topics of the report. According to the report; LGBTI+ friendly health services were not provided in university medics and hospitals. University administrations, including foundation universities, protected discriminatory health officials and students' complaints were suppressed.
