Conservatism Flirting With Neoliberalism Against Rights Kaos GL - News Portal for LGBTI+
Kaos GL hosted Prof. Dr. Simten Coşar for the Wednesday Seminar on 11 January. Coşar talked about neoliberalism, the core elements of conservative politics and their relation to identity politics.
Conservative politics

Coşar told that conservatism acts schizophrenically as it embraces rejection of the new and modernity at the same time. She explained that conservatism demands the change in regard to class, institutions and private property be by itself, not as part of a plan.

“... we all become a little conservative after a good dinner.”

Classifying the constituents of conservatism as person (not individual, woman or class), family, private property, tradition and the state, Coşar examined how those elements have been flirting with liberalism since 70s as neoconservatism emerged.

Saying “defining the Turkish family as a network of solidarity is a pretty conservative approach”, Coşar underlined that flexible working hours hold women responsible for household, cutting the budget of social services and rather encouraging charity. She commented that it is quite comprehensible for people deprived of social services but only living on charity to vote for parties supporting charity and that it is not due to selfishness or ignorance whatsoever.

“Islamists gained most from identity politics”

In the last part of her speech, she explained that Islamist identity became visible as it goes along with social codes compared to woman, gay-lesbian and Kuridsh identities. Coşar also added that identity politics are feeding neoconservatism and it results in “tolerance” rather recognition of diversity.
