During the neighborhood chiefs’ meeting, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said “CHP puts a gay quota as 1/5 for the elections to be held in the parish councils of the CHP District Municipalities."

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had a speech during 41st Meeting of Neighborhood Representatives. He used discriminative phrases during his speech: “CHP puts a homosexual quota as 1/5 for the elections to be held in the parish councils of the CHP District Municipalities. May Allah lead them to the right path”

As Hürriyet’s news, the first part of his speech as follows:

“As the main oppositional party, CHP is far more separated from Turkish society. Right now they put a gay quota as 1/5 for the elections to be held in the parish councils of the CHP District Municipalities. God please do not let us lose our ways like them! If there is no measures within a party anymore, it will not be clear where they are going to be. Keep this going.”

Local media targeted Nilüfer Municipality

Which municipalities’ regulation Erdoğan implied in this speech is still uncertain, but Nilüfer City Council Parish Committee was targeted in local media. Şehir Bursa Newspaper targeted Nilüfer Municipality, and they distorted the implementation of positive discrimination for LGBTIs within parish committees of the municipalities. The newspaper claimed in the news that ‘people in villages revolted against the quota’, but they did not specify who are those people.

On the other hand, as an institution struggling for LGBTI equality Nilüfer City Council explained the ‘LGBTİ quota’ as follows in their website:

“In the elections, there are women quota as 1/3, youth quota (among 18-29) as 1/3, (if there are candidates) disability quota as 1/5, and LGBTI quota as 1/5. These quotas are implemented in the neighborhood in general."
