Trans woman, activist and performer Esmeray Özadikti has reacted to the fines imposed on the channel for the remarks she made on the program she participated in on Halk TV.

In a post on her X account, Esmeray criticized the imposition of a 3 per cent administrative fine on Halk Meydanı, hosted by İrfan Değirmenci on Halk TV, for being “contrary to national and moral values due to LGBT+ ratings”, saying:

“LGBTI+ people are constantly being targeted! The more you target these people, the more they are being subjected to attacks. These children are living in fear of death on a daily basis, so even my appearance on the program titled ‘Halk Meydanı’ and putting this issue on the agenda was a morale boost for them. That is what I mean...”

The program, hosted by İrfan Değirmenci had featured feminists, women and LGBTI+ rights activists, including Esmeray Özadikti, as part of the November 25 International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Esmeray’s comments in the program, “I am sure that the LGBT+ children, especially those in Generation Z, who are seeing me on the screen right now are very happy and do not feel alone”, were cited as the reason for fine issued by the RTÜK.

Değirmenci: We have nothing to learn from you about nationalism and morality

İrfan Değirmenci mentioned the fines imposed on the channel on Halk TV’s main news bulletin yesterday (December 28). Değirmenci said: “RTÜK didn’t pass 2023 and hit us with the cranberry stick again. To whom? Halk TV, the public. Who determines national and moral values? Who is the judge of the damage to national and moral values caused by our broadcasting here, Mr. Ebubekir? We have nothing to learn from you about nationalism and morality, the members who vote and raise their hands at RTÜK. You can't deter them, they will not be deterred. We keep saying what we know and shouting the truth from the screen.”
