Democracy and peace were discussed at the “World Forum for Democracy” organized by the Council of Europe.
“World Forum for Democracy” was organized in Strasbourg by the Council of Europe between November 6-8. Human Rights Program Coordinator of Kaos GL Association, attended the event, which brought together activists and experts from different regions of the world to discuss the relationship between peace and democracy.
In the aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the events and parallel sessions regarding the theme “war has returned to the Europe continent” were held and the relationship between participation and peace was also addressed.
Kerem Dikmen, Human Rights Program Coordinator of Kaos GL and lawyer Kardelen Yılmaz from May 17 Association also took part in this year’s forum organized by Third Sector Foundation of Turkey (TUSEV) and Association of Civil Society Development Center (STGM).
One of this year’s keynote panel and breakout session speakers was Zooey ZEPHYR, who represents the state of Montana in the US Senate. ZEPHYR, the first openly transgender member of the Senate, interpreted the relationship between democracy and peace through the lens of gender equality in the sessions she attended.
After four plenary sessions, 12 forums and 8 workshops, the Forum ended with a closing performance.

The World Forum for Democracy is a unique platform for political decision-makers and activists to debate solutions to key challenges for democracies worldwide. By identifying and analysing experimental initiatives and practices, the Forum highlights and encourages democracy innovations at the grassroots and their transfer on a systemic level in order to strengthen the foundations of democratic societies. The Forum thus contributes to the evolution of democracy towards more participatory and inclusive structures and institutions.
