Turkey’s Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK) fined a TV channel for broadcasting “The Normal Heart”, Emmy Award-winning movie about the HIV epidemic in 1980s.
Moviemax Premier, a movie channel on satellite television provider Digiturk, was fined 13.600 TL (about 5.000 Euros) for broadcasting “The Normal Heart” after 1am with a “18+” sign for adult content.
RTUK: Sponsor of “general morality” in Turkish broadcasting
RTUK described the movie as “hurtful to society’s sense of shame and challenging to the limits of general morality” in its expert report:
“In the movie, two men are seen kissing and naked. Displaying sections of love and sexual lives of gay men, which are difficult to be accepted in public space, is evaluated as hurtful to society’s sense of shame and challenging to the limits of general morality.”
RTUK has already fined 3 other TV channels for same-sex kiss and relationship in two music videos and a movie this year.
