May Day in Ankara: LGBTI+s “spread across” the corteges Kaos GL - News Portal for LGBTI+

May Day, organized by trade unions and professional organizations including Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK), Confederation of Public Employees Trade Unions (KESK), Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions (Türk-İş), Ankara Medical Chamber (ATO) and Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB) was celebrated in Tandoğan this year as well.

Gathering in front of Atatürk Cultural Center, laborers marched to Tandoğan. Having been informed about the bans on LGBTI+ flags and banners by the organizing committee, which learned the ban during their interview with the police department, LGBTI+ organizations spread across the rally site.

LGBTI+ organizations set up a crisis desk in order to deal with any problems that may raise throughout the day.

LGBTI+s, participating in the protest, joined the cortege of other organizations instead of forming a separate cortege, and they marched with banners, LGBTI+ and trans flags.

The rally host greeted LGBTI+s as follows:

“We greet LGBTI+s, who are always being targeted by the government via hate policies, with the hope of a future, where we will all be free. Happy International Workers’ Day, May Day to all LGBTI+ laborers, who are subjected to bullying and mobbing at workplaces and forced to be in the closet while they are working. Despite hate, long live life!”
