While LGBTI+ people filled the squares across Turkey on May 1st, they were also targeted by hate. Ali Yalçın, President of Memur-Sen, a union known for its close ties to the government, launched a hate campaign against LGBTI+ individuals and targeted them during the May 1st event held in Ankara.

Yalçın targeted the “Gender Equality” course that had been banned by the Ministry of National Education and said:

“Some groups disguised as unions are painting blackboards purple in schools and trying to spread LGBT propaganda to children. No one should dare to corrupt the children of this nation. We will continue to defend the family and protect future generations. The definition of family must change, it should be constitutionally guaranteed that a family consists of a man and a woman through marriage. Daytime TV shows, series, digital broadcasts, and social media attacks that criminalize the family, destroy privacy, and promote perversion must be recognized and strictly sanctioned. They must not be allowed to continue.”
