Intergenerational Communication-II, which is conducted by LGBTI+ Aging Studies Programme of May 17 Association, was held online on Wednesday, April 17th.

Second part of the Intergenerational Communication was held Kaos GL - News Portal for LGBTI+

The discussion conducted by Özge Gökpınar focused on Pride Marches and Anti-Homophobia Meetings, with two activists from different age groups participating in the dialogue. Ahmet Soykarcı, a young activist in their 20s, and Seçin Tuncel, an activist in their 40s, began the conversation by introducing themselves.

“Anti-Homophobia Meetings mark the initiation of solidarity among activists

Seçin Tuncel shared her insights about Anti-Homophobia Meetings, shedding light on their nature and the activities they encompass. They noted that these meetings, originating in Ankara, had expanded to approximately fifty cities by 2015, initially arising from a shared need for understanding. Tuncel also underscored that these gatherings mark the inception of the solidarity and companionship forged among activists.

Ahmet Soykarcı discussed the significance of Pride Marches and Pride Weeks in Istanbul, highlighting the role of the Istanbul Pride Week Committee in their organization. He explained that the committee began its efforts by collaborating with associations and later with independent activists through an open call. Soykarcı emphasized that this solidarity was fostered within the context of an oppressive environment. Despite facing increased challenges since 2015 due to shifts in the political climate, he noted that members of the LGBTI+ community, or “lubunyas,” continued to organize events such as the Trans Pride March and the LGBTI Pride March, even amidst prohibitions imposed by local authorities.

How has our status changed over the past 25 years?

Özge Gökpınar initiated a reflection on the progress of the movement by considering the pressures faced and the achievements made over the years. Through her questions, activists engaged in an assessment of the evolution from the circumstances of 25 years ago, particularly focusing on the historical context of the 17 May Anti-Homophobia Events/Marches in Ankara and the development of Pride Week Events/Pride Marches in Istanbul.

May 17 Association LGBTI+ Aging Studies Programme has announced its plan to host two online Intergenerational Communication Events in March and April. The first event, held on March 27, 2024, covered discussions on the LGBTI+ movement within a general framework.
